I am looking for a way to classify ethnicity of participants in a global project. It seems that in most countries that operate a census there are questions on the census forms about ethnicity - but each country has developed their own coding. I know that there is a globally accepted ISO classification of occupations, but does anyone know if there is the equivalent for ethnicity?
I have couple of suggestions.
I have come across organization Aperian Global (http://www.aperianglobal.com/), who have collected data across the globe and characterised work culture, Some examples are as follows
· Independent vs Interdependent
o Independent – take more individual initiative/ decision making / recognition
o Interdependent – focus more on group goal/ decision through group consensus / group recognition
· Direct vs indirect
o Direct – direct to the point/ openly challenge/ candid feedback
o Indirect- careful about word/ avoid handling difficulties/ cares formality
· Task vs relationship
o Task- moves quickly to business, relationship develop alongside, focus on task
o Relationship – relationship building critical to getting the job gone, focus on network
· Egalitarianism vs Status
o Egalitarianism – self-directed, ok to challenge seniors
o Status -follow guidelines, respect the position (seniors)
Another school of thought is Spiral Dynamics theory. This theory has different levels - Survival Level, Tribal Level, Warlord Level, Civilization Level, Achievement Level, Ecological Level, Flex-Flow Level. Details are available on internet.
