Yes there are techniques for identifying butternut and its hybrids with Japanese walnut. Two publications are available:
Ross-Davis et al. 2008. Morphological and molecular methods to identify butternut (Juglans cinerea) and butternut hybrids: relevance to butternut conservation. Tree Physiol. 28(7): 1127-1133
Farlee et al. 2010. Identification of Butternuts and Butternut Hybrids. Purdue Univ Ext FNR-420-W, 11 p.
The latter one is nice as it has color pictures - I will try to attach a copy. For some hands on training try Sandra ANAGNOSTAKIS at the CT Ag Station as she is very good at identifying butternut and hybrids and is close to you. Cheers, Kurt
Thanks Kurt! Exactly what I was looking for.... and Sandra is absolutely amazing. Love her chestnut work too! Thanks so much for your help. Keep up the great work.
