Is there a way to measure sap flow on a budget?

I have been researching different sap flow meters, but they are all quite pricey. It is easy to rack up a hefty tap by adding data loggers and setting up power sources. Are there manual measurements or inexpensive ways to set up measurements to collect a large sample size?

Many researchers opt to construct in-house sensors. The component materials to build a sensor is quite cheap, though can be time consuming depending on the quantity needed.
