I am doing research to assess the effect of reflective practice on nursing students' academic and clinical performance. Any suggestions on the tools to be used?
As a suggestion, if ever you find one that suits your research, consider if the items of that tests somehow aligns with standardized nursing intervention taxonomies like the Nursing Interventions Classification. In that way you are guided in assessing the construct validity of the test you choose.
I suggest that you look at: Fitzpatrick J, While A E and Roberts J D (1997) Measuring clinical nurse performance: development of the King's Nurse Performance Scale. International Journal of Nursing Studies. 34: 222-230; and Fitzpatrick J M, While A E and Roberts J D (1999). Shiftwork and its impact upon nurse performance: current knowledge and research issues. Journal of Advanced Nursing. 29: 18-27. If you want to use the scale please contact me via email.
Because of the basic principle: "Every individual is unique," the nursing education cannot be strict and subscribe to one standardized clinical evaluation. But all clinical performances should be based on what is approved by the Professional Regulation Commission's framework of the nursing profession - the Nursing Competencies. From here, all evaluations, whether in the clinical or school setting should be based and formulated with these competencies in mind.
I too will suggest the Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric. Check it out and if it suits your research needs, then contact Ms. Lasater for permission to use.
I am cautious about using the Lasater clinical judgment rubric to asses clinical performance. While it has some established reliability, at least one study demonstrated challenges with inter-rater reliability. The instrument does not have well established validity and the author of the clinical judgment model (Tanner, 2006) which is what Lasater's rubric is designed to assess, has expressed concerns regarding content validity of the rubric. Moreover, Lasater's rubric was designed to be used in the simulation environment and is being generalized for use in the clinical environment. Finally there are other performance behaviors that support clinical judgment that must be assessed. Clinical assessment should also address performance behaviors described in the QSEN competencies.
I do not know if you know Mr. Mikko Sarikoski. He is very well known by his research in clinical placement evalution through his CLES+T scale. It is very good tool which is used internationally... Let me know if I could help you with contacts...and I will be interested in outcomes of your research... Best wishes Andrea
you should review the National Council of State Boards of Nursing to review the detailed test plans for RN and LPN. This is the basis for what they are tested on nationally, thus establish their knowledge basis for entry into practice.
In Australia many Universities creat their own Clinical Experience Assessment tool for when students are in the clinical area. They are usually based on the Australian Nursing Comptency Standards.
