Photocatalysts are typically evaluated in the photodegradation of dyes or organic pollutants in aqueous solutions. Methylene blue is a common model substrate, as are Rhodamine B and azo-dyes.
Everybody is able to make MB and RB tests. That explains their wide use. But they should be used only if you want to decolorize water. For other applications there are more complex tests.
The use of dyes as models for the study of photocatalytic reaction is well known, however the reaction kinetics id pH dependent. So you should take care about this parameter when you chose dyes. MB is good candidate for photocalatytic reaction.
The paper mentioned is devoted to the suitability of MB to be used for measuring the photocatalytic activity of modified TiO2 under visible-light irradiation.
So, for measuring the photocatalytic activity of pristine TiO2, MB should work just fine.That is why I posted that paper :)
