I'm hunting for a term that can be applied to all organisms -- e.g. can be used to refer to things like creatures who live in the deep ocean where there's no light not having eyes, etc.

This idea/term is similar (I think) to embodied cognition for humans... perhaps a term related to the concept of "niches" ?
