I am currently preparing a questionnaire that is intended for young people with and without a refugee background in Germany. Depending on which group the participants count themselves to, they will be shown different questions. Unfortunately, I could not find any validated, yet sensitive sample questions for this in previous research. Researchers commonly pose direct questions about the residence title or the reasons for fleeing - both very confidential pieces of information.
However, I am more interested in whether people see themselves in this way, i.e. classify themselves as "refugees" in Germany. Does anyone have any ideas about existing measures? I would be happy about feedback or ideas, especially if you have already been confronted with such questions or involved in related research.

But the question you are asking is not sensitive at all, you are asking whether they identify as german or whether they feel welcome. You don't have to ask about origin at all, unless you wish to distinguish between the groups and perhaps find causes for why they do not feel welcome relating to their origin or physical and mental state on arrival. You can bypass nationality and ethnicity altogether, say so in the intro. The categories relating to their previous life you then use to compare can be widened and generalized. I also think some refugees might be worried that information they provide will affect their asylum application. They will not have much trust in any system, as they most of the time, have seen pretty bad examples of what "a system" can do.
