According to what is written in “Helen Gardner's book of history of art”, we see that there is a direct relationship between art and politics, and neither is unaffected by the other. Sometimes art is a reflection of politics and a display of the power of the government and kings of that era, and sometimes politics is a manifestation of the artist's inspiration in creating his works of art. Which of these two paths will be realized depends on its impact and influence in that era and people.
First of all, arts nowdays seem to serve a very elevated purpose of the human spirit but we cant ignore how it happened in the Past.
In the past art was a symbol of wealth and power, and trhough the construction of symbolism and narratives the artists created "Images" of power and wealth through architecture (e.g. An article I wrote about power of nuns in the New Spain) through Painting (I cite the work "tres siglos en el tepeyac" published by the National Basilica of Guadalupe) Throug music (Al combate, piezas para la coronación de carlos III en la catedral metropolitana, a set of musical works by Ignacio de Jerusalem y stella, who was a composer from New Spain) Literature (Los prodigios de la omnipotencia y milagros de la gracia en la vida de la venerable sierva de Dios Catarina de S. Juan . Which is a biographical novel based on the idea that a mexican nun became saint, this gave popularity, power and wealth to the writer becase "He was the priest for the nun") And through Theatre (Las entradas triunfales de los virreyes, which were spectacles held to receive the New rulers of new Spain)
The examples mentioned above are a few of the many representations of politics in the American continent during Colonial domination, there are of course more representations but the ones that I see are tailored foryou questions are those. In addition I have to say that nowdays art no longer serves that purpose since the Digital media covers most of them.
But until the 20th century the art and politics relationship was very close and special.
I could provide you more info about my examples i you need them
Art has the power to evoke emotion, open dialogue, and challenge paradigms. It can be used to inspire action, call attention to injustice, and bring visibility to issues that would otherwise remain unseen.
"The relationship between art and politics is multifaceted. Art can contribute to political discourse by supporting the current political and ideological views. However, more often than not, art is a disruptive form, that serves as a tool for changing existing political and social realities. Art can address certain political issues or reinterpret different social structures (for example, it can reveal different power balances in the society, offering alternative understandings of certain events, etc.)"
