There is no standard method for measuring the tar content in the producer gas in biomass gasificatin systems. However, there has been a protocol developed early in 2000 in a step to reach a standard. Has this protocol been standardized?
We also tried to approach to this question. The only "standard" isthe CEN/TS 15439 (TS=technical specification). We organized some workshops to find out about the status of numerous tar and more general gas analysis methods for processes in close relation to gasification and pyrolysis and product gas upgrading as well as their catalytic conversion. Most workshops were in conjunction with the European Biomass conferences. The presentation files can be found here: http://www.gas-analysis-webinars.org/.
There are developments for on-line tar analysis methods on the way. But also the "classics" like "tar protocol" or now better CEN/TS 15439 or SPA are in use. BUT there are a number of different adaptations to the originally proposed setups. You will find out by looking through the presentations. We are trying to figure out what is really needed and what should be done in normative means but also by having available "reference methods" for raw process gases, treated process gases as well as cleaned und "ultra"-clean gases. It is about tar, sulfur, particles and other undesired by-products of the gases.
Do you still follow your topic of using char for gas cleaning? Is there still ongoing work in Twente?
