I need a procedure for determination of methanol in alcoholic beverages that can be performed without the need of analytic separation equipment like HPLC or Gas Chromatography. I don't need to quantify the amount of methanol, just determine if it is present.

Boric acid is sufficient for a qualitative detection. Methanol forms a boric acid ester which leads to a green flame during combustion.

To test for the presence of methanol, you can apply sodium dichromate to a sample of the beverage. To do so, mix 8 mL of a sodium dichromate solution with 4 mL of sulfuric acid.
