Good question indeed. Differences in the quality of separation cause a large problem in quantitatively assessing C storage. How good do you need the separation to be?
I am interested in removing the light fraction from the bulk sieved soil for experimental set-up. Using compressed air to remove OM is reasonably doable for small amounts of soil. PhD students processed 15 kg yesterday.
