Particles are defined by two invariants: their mass and their spin, the two Casimirs of the Poincaré group.This implies, in prticular, that there doesn't exist a unitary transformation from a one-particle state of given mass and given spin to another one-particle state of different mass and different spin: such states are orthogonal. Therefore the statement that a massive particle can be represented by a photon doesn't make sense-even without entering into the subtleties of gauge invariance, since only two polarization states of the photon are physical. This is discussed in all textbooks.
The light is a form of matter. So, any consideration of photons could be applied to the matter, including duality. Interesting paper. However, this duality for big-mass particle appears in extremally short wavelength (and perhaps in extremally fast repeating events). If the last can be shown mathematically, it would be great. The smaller the piece of matter, the deeper penetration into the past available (?).

If you read my current paper you will see I used similar concept to prove E is not equal to mc2.
But for matter it is mc2+ihv
anti matter hv+ i mc2
and for photons it is hv+ihv

I have to agree with Stam Nicolis - mass is a concept, which is not used in electromagnetism. Also Einstein's equation E = mc² (which is just the rest energy of a particle with mass m and not the overall energy) that was mentioned earlier gives a clear hint to the correctnes of this statement.
Energy is not to be understood as equal to mass (if it would be actually the same there would be no reason that a mass can't be represented by photons as each photon has of course some energy), it is just proportional to the mass (with the proportion constant c²).
The strict mathematical argument of Stam is the more rigorous one compared to mine.
What the Harvard-MIT group has done doesn't have anything to do with any duality between matter and light. It has to do with the fact that photons, while electrically neutral, are exchanged between electrically charged particles: this exchange is what it means that two electrically charged particles interact. One implication is that two photons, that can interact in vacuum only through a very weak quantum effect, since they don't carry any charge themselves, can interact much more strongly in the presence of matter and, in particular, can, apparently, form bound states. But such a state can only exist within matter, where photons have significantly different properties than in vacuum. Incidentally, the language of press releases is substantially less precise than the language of technical papers and shouldn't be relied on for understanding technical issues but, rather, just as a reference to the technical work itself.

1. The representation this paper talks about is energy, mass and momentum representation and not equivalence. I agree that in QM there is more to the observable physical representation, which is spin. That is why massive particle will not spontaneously degenerate into normal photons. I conjecture that the photons in representation are not normal photons but special kind of continuously generating and annihilating virtual photons, whose wave functions super impose to give the wave function of the non-zero rest mass particle and the representation is in agreement with the spin of the particle.
2. If you read through the paper it also talks about representation of photon as an electron going below the speed of light and another electron going above the speed of light. In that it talks about the representation is in terms of energy, mass and momentum. The theory about spin still needs to be developed.
