Dear All,

A year ago the University of Kaposvár (Hungary) became famous. Not because of its distinguished scientific performance but because of a dress code proclaimed as an order of the rector. This direction prescribed how to be dressed at the university. The dress code banned e.g. flip-flops, mini-skirts, sandals and heavy make up but even shorts etc.

Art undergraduates with their instructor at Kaposvar University took action and protested after the clothes crackdown was imposed on 2013 October 1 having striped their clothes during a class.

My opinion: I have no objections against elegant clothes. I would be happy if I could afford to dress as the rector magnificus of Kaposvár suggested. However, I do not prefer a classical tie but a bow-tie which is not preferred at Kaposvár. In addition, I thought always that clothes do not make the man (the cowl does not make the monk). The main argument of the rector for his code was that even official persons from abroad can visit his university and what would be the opinion of these people about the institution?

How is it in your country? Is there a dress code at your university? Does the cowl make the monk?

Here you are the original dress code:

This is the translation of the first line:

“The aim of this code is to determine the dressing directions for the citizens of the University of Kaposvár.”
