An example of the former would be a cell with two electrodes made on FTO glass and the latter might be electrodes synthesized on carbon paper or cloth and pressed on either side of a proton exchange membrane. When using photoelectrodes to degrade organics and produce electricity, I want to call both of these photocatlytic fuel cells, but I feel there should be a formal distinction between the two that I am not aware of.
If it has a membrane, it's a PEMFC; if it doesn't, it's a liquid electrolyte fuel cell (sometimes named for the electrolyte, like phosphoric acid or molten carbonate fuel cells). So, PEMFCs always include the membrane-electrode assembly (MEA), with a sub-distinction for how the membranes are applied - the most common is 'coated catalyst membrane,' CCM, when the electrodes are applied directly to the membrane (e.g. by spray-coating). They're 'Decal-transfer' if you're creating electrode on a substrate, then applying, 'gas-diffusion electrode,' GDE if you apply the electrode to the GDL/MPL first, and typically both of those add hot pressing. Use your description of the method as the name i.e. Dual Electrode Photocatalytic Fuel Cell or (DEP Fuel Cell), and Proton Exchange Membrane Photocatalytic Fuel Cell or (PEM Fuel Cell). Keep it simple.
Thanks David, but they are both technically dual electrode and they both can have a PEM, thus my quandary. Sorry for not making that totally clear in my description. I will take your suggestions into consideration.
