Mendeley replaced the desktop software with a new one around 2020 and I must say I regret the switch. It is the worst software experience I have encountered, and that must mean a lot given I used Windows ME and Windows 8.
1. The Word plugin does not sync automatically. You have to restart Word when you download new references.
2. The Software asks for passwords unnecessarily. You have to log in each time you open the app which is so uncharacteristic of desktop software.
3. Files fail to load sometimes.
I have no option but to switch to Zotero. I know it to be good but I chose Mendeley only because it gave free space and it was as good.

The issues you're facing with Mendeley Reference Manager might not be exclusive to Windows 8. Try using the 'Refresh References' option in Mendeley Cite for sync issues, and consult Mendeley's Support Centre if needed. Password prompts and loading problems could be software or internet issues.
Zotero is a viable alternative, being an open-source tool with a 'single-click capture' feature and PDF metadata retrieval. It's wise to compare features of both Mendeley and Zotero before making a decision.

Hsin-Yuan Chen , I think you did not get me. I am saying Mendeley is worse than Windows 8, not that I use it on Windows 8. I use Windows 10 and it is currently very frustrating to use.
