Pathogenic bacteria use protease as virulence factors which helps them colonize skin with breached integrity. From these initial sites of colonization, pathogens can disseminate into deeper layers of the skin, possibly leading to the spread of infection. With that said, Plesiomonas shigelloides, unline other aquatic pathogens, such as Aeromonas and Shewanella, have no reports related to open or penetrating wounds, nor an association of this species with soft tissue infection.
