Recent discussion here on Researchgate has suggested that centers in the Angular Gyrus, may be involved in creation of core consciousness. This has the added cachet of allowing consciousness to survive destruction of the hippocampal area. Some researchers claim that in fact it does survive trauma to the hippocampus and medial templar lobe, suggesting that it might fit into the brain model before declarative memory. If this is true, then integrative elements in the Angular Gyrus might be indicated in core consciousness.
In the Angular Gyrus Model of Consciousness at least two centers of core consciousness are likely to be found in the Angular Gyrus, 1. the Awareness center will be an integrative center linked primarily to the neocortical integration centers, and 2. the consciousness center will be also linked to emotive inputs and to meta-cognitive inputs from areas such as area 10. This center will also link to the speech center allowing for an autobiographical "Voice". On the Right Side of the brain the link to the speach center will not be as noticeable, and may even be missing.
