Standard British English appeared to be the most prestigious and widely acceptable of English. Then we have standard American English and standard Australian English each has its unique features with a great deal of commonalities. yet , we have a number of “new Englishes ” . The question will be whether to adopt the main stream Standard English or to think of a number of “ New Standard Englishes”
I think that it depends on the context. For everyday use, any version of English is acceptable. But for academic writing, consistent use of one of the standard Englishes is expected., which I know males academic writing harder for those who are not native speakers).
I am a believe in Communicative Language Theory, meaning that the first goal is simply to be understood. Advanced vocabulary and grammar (and pronunciation) can come later.
