Is SEM/EDS an effective technique to verify the presence of metals (%) deposited on the surface of certain materials?

We used to verify the metal loading on the surface of materials by analyzing them with the SEM/EDS instrument. However, recently, we have been asked to conduct the metal loading verification with ICP-MS measurement by digesting the material. To what extent is this approach practical, considering it is difficult to completely digest the materials?
