Based on the findings of our colleagues which confirm that integrating CALL or ICT in EFL / ESL results mainly from self-training, I reckon this is the case in many countries. I wonder whether this phenomenon is inherent in the nature of the traning in CALL itself which is more a process than a one-shot training session. It seems that only enthusiasts and those with high grit can subscribe to the lifelong training!
Hi. ICT tools proved to be useful in developing students' linguistic competences, and enhancing students' performance in English. But in learning a FL face to face lectures and the interaction with the teacher play a major role in using the language appropriately in different situations for the majority of the students. Blended learning is an opportunity to extend the learning process beyond classroom, and no more limits the student within a controlled context. In some cases where the learner is highly motivated, he/she can adopt self training and develop fluency and accuracy.
One of the goals of education is to make people lifelong learners. Once a certain level of proficiency is achieved, people can be expected to perform self-study to achieve their goals.
I teach a teacher training course in CALL - following on from work by Mike Levy. The fact that it's hands-on gives our students insights into drawing on theory and CALL evaluation principles to develop their own tools (podcasts for listening and other skills in this instance). Some of our students have got back to us with how they've used this in the field; others have gone on to related PhDs. Whether or not they go on to develop materials, I think the course gives them an outlook which allows them to experiment with the many resources and apps available to engage learners inside and outside the classroom. Self learning is indubitably an emerging trend in the 21st century because without it , the intellectual journey towards excellence will fail. Notably, CALL and ICT have provided the learners with the gateway mechanisms required for self learning. The in built potentials of such resources have paved the way for e learning and distance learning which guide the interested learners towards serendipity learning and self discovery which are vital to the acquisition of knowledge and skills required for meeting the demands of the modern world dominated by the inevitable influences of the so called globalization process.
There are lots of workshops and training courses in CALL in Iran. At Alzahra University, a state university in the capital, we are launching a new Master of Arts (MA) program in CALL for the first time in TEFL commencing February 2021. The aim of the program is to graduate students in TEFL with a specific focus on CALL. Of course based on the personality type of people some prefer self study and self development but specially in the younger generation can learn by self study but definitely the older generation needs step by step guidance in this regard.
The spread of Corona Virus has proved that the use of computers in inevitable in all fields of science and language teaching is no exception. So all language teachers have to become familiar with the benefits of the use of computers and different platforms and softwares in their teaching. There is no escape from it.
