When PhD students start to write their theses, they have usually published some papers from their findings. There are different points of view about citing the papers. What do you think; students can cite their papers in their PhD theses?
I think self-citation in PhD thesis is possible but need to avoid self-plagiarism as mentioned above by Asma. Reason being in thesis when you cite certain papers of your own, there is certain affinity / relatedness between the thesis & papers in which you need to avoid self-plagiarism (from literature text, conceptual framework / research model, sample, methodology, result findings etc perspectives). Alternatively, your papers should cover certain / subset of constructs of your thesis research model or the study context is different from your thesis research e.g. leverage on additional unused PhD data collected etc. On the other hand, benefits of self-citation in PhD thesis include strengthen the confidence of examiners / supervisor on the quality of your PhD thesis / research work since you have some papers published.
I agree. Yes, students have to be careful with the self -plagiarism tendencies within self-citation. Like the other citations, self-citation itself should also be used in the thesis in regard to avoid plagiarism.
