In different standards like in ASTM D1002 and ISO4587, the thickness of the sheet to check adhesive's strength is around 1.6 mm. My question is why this this is 1.6 mm with a tight tolerance, why not 1 mm or 2 mm, while we are mainly interested in overlap area? Is thickness linked with load distribution in the sample or some other reasons? Please advise.

Thanks
