In our current society, research is no longer location dependent, for instance the university, especially not in the social sciences and the humanities. in case you don't need a lab for your work and all kinds of very expensive tools/software, I can even imagine why it is preferable to be an independent researcher sometimes. all the best and keep up the good work

You can do research by residing anywhere, provided that you are endowed with necessary academic inputs and infrastructure to pursue it properly and proper guidance from someone who is expert in the field.
It is true that quality research can be made by working in a reputed university having good library and other resources.But now in the age of IT revolution,a lot of resources are available online.We have numerous sources to study. Open courseware,e-journals,various other platforms are there to do quality reasearch under the supervision of an intellectual.
Research can be conducted from anywhere provided the appropriate resources are available. If your research only requires a PC and some papers, then I do not see why not. However, connections with a wider research community is important since your research findings would need to be disseminated to that community. Interaction with other researchers adds great value and helps through the exchange of ideas and thoughts.Therefore, the opinions of others can often be insightful when a research paper is to be peer reviewed and eventuall published.
