Is metadiscourse useful in academic writing?

Crismore et al. (1993) define metadiscourse as: "linguistic material in texts, written or spoken, which does not add anything to the propositional content but that is intended to help the listener or reader organize, interpret and evaluate the information."

I don't think you can write a scientific article without metadiscourse. See Ken Hyland's work on academic writing. Scientists use boosters, hedges, modifiers, etc. to indicate the relevance of information, its significance, or to modify the strength of the claims being made. See also Swales' studies of the genre of the academic article.
