I have a botanical sample stored in xylene that I wish to critical point dry for examination in a scanning electron microscope. I do not wish to take the sample back into ethanol or acetone and therefore wish to use xylene as the intermittent medium.
In a no-sample trial run it appears that the two media do mix completely but I was told that xylene is not miscible with LCO2 and I'm uncertain now whether to believe what I've been told or what I have apparently observed. I really don't want to risk wrecking the sample.
