True, many charges are exploitive and unfair. However, the production and handling of information involves costs that must somehow be paid for. User-pays is one way, payment from general tax revenues is another. I think the main objection should be to charges that are far in excess of costs or to those that generate excessive profits for commercial purveyors of information.

Thats true specially when people exploit others scientific needs to earn money, like most journals dealers.
