Kant argued that it is never virtuous to do the right thing to, say, get into heaven or avoid hell. He held that it is only virtuous to do the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do. But many world religions disagree. What do you think?

No , in hinduism we have stipulation in Vedas about what is "dharma" similar to what Kant says . Going against is accountable later :)
Being Virtuous, to me, is finding the zero state of mind. A zero state of mind does no more act to gain/avoid something. Whatever good/bad it gains, it takes it so easily and adopts the situation. This has been taught by my Late Grandfather and I am glad to announce that he has taught me after his physical death. As Aparna Ma'm says correctly: One does not care for rewards/punishments.

Reward and avoiding punishment is just an effect of being virtuous but it does not make you virtuous. Virtue is often tied to being humble. Humble people do not normally tend to look towards staying out of trouble or getting a reward. It is just about doing what is right no matter how hard it may be or how many disagree with you.

Doing good to others transforms the person who performs the action more than who receives the benefits of such actions. Just start doing something good to others, even if by wrong motives, that soon you will be another person. The smile of relief of the person helped heals the one who gives comfort to him.
Integrity, and Virtuosity, are doing the right thing, when NO one is looking, including you're very own creator, this is what makes one virtuous. When one is humble, they have no need in doing wrong. The humble man may have no food, nor money, yet he knows, instead of stealing the pie of the womans' window seal, knocking and asking for some, will more then likely yield a conversation, coffee, pie, and a new found friend. I agree that doing the right thing because it is right for us, and that this way of thinking and acting in line with our traditions, culture, religion and spirit, has its reward in terms of harmony in thinking, saying and doing. What maintains in peace and congruence body, mind and spirit.
