is it taxonomically correct to referpopulations of african invader fruit flies (bactrocera dorsalis taxa) as bactrocera dorsalis invadens? I am fully aware that Schutze et al., (2015) synonymized the species in question to bactrocera dorsalis but I still feel that the species nomenclature should maintain 'invadens' thats why i am suggesting bactrocera dorsalis invadens.
From taxonomic point of view these two are different sub-species so they are not the same since they are classified to sub-species level.
Reckson, check ..Schutze et al., (2015) synonymized the bactrocera complex such that key species eg Bactrocera invadens (Drew, Tsuruta & White) and Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) were shown to be oneand thesame species. My problem is B. dorsalis (Hendel) is in Asia whilst the synonymy to Hendel which is invadens is in Africa - therefore I am proposing name the African dorsalis ....Bactrocera dorsalis invadens. Is my proposed nomenclature taxonomically correct?
It is incorrect. If you write Bactrocera dorsalis invadens that means taxonomically that you have a subspecies called B. d. invadens. If you just want to refer to a population, then just write it in the text, e.g., an African population of Bactrocera dorsalis.
