Is it statistically correct to compare means of a same variable assessed in population of different diagnosis?

I wanted to know if it's possible to use any stats tool to compare Overall Balance Index (numerical value, continuous) of Ataxic patients (group 1) and Parkinson's (group 2). The groups are heterogeneous with respect to age.
