I am interested in comparing fish abundance along the river's continuum (10 sampling sites along a 40 km river longitudinal gradient). Sampling would start in upstream sections, that are shallow with fast flowing currents (i.e. most similar to streams), and would continue up until the most deep and large sections of the river (i.e. 25m wide, 5 m deep). I can not use gill nets in all sites. The most appropriate sampling techniques for streams are electrofishing or hand nets, while large sections require gill nets that are keept through a 24h cicle. Is there a proper sampling protocol that I can use to compare fish abundance across all my sites? Any advice on how to properly conduct fish sampling in a way that I can compare abundance differences across the longitudinal gradient?
