If you perform a restart on any Gaussian job it will write over the contents of the earlier .log/.out file. Typically, an incomplete log./.out file can be loaded in GView showing the results thus far. Of course, having performed a restart I no longer have a "history" so I cannot view the steps taken in my geometry bond scan.
Is it usual that an in completed Gaussian .chk (or even after formatted), will not load in GView?
If a checkpoint file become corrupted , can not be loaded in G-View completely
First, why would you overwrite your log file? if you are under linux just specify the name of your new output in the shell
g09 out.log
if you are in running your job using gview, just save your input under a new name and the output will have that new name (remember to have your old chk to restart)
Am not sure about using the formatted check file, but since you can read all geometries from the completed chk file, then am pretty certain that you will find your xyz data somewhere in the formatted chk file, use some grep skills and you will get them
Lastly, to answer your question, if you are doing a relaxed or rigid scan, the only way to see your scan from the chk file in gview is to complete the scan, it wont open if it is incomplete like the output file
