I have a list of research papers with corresponding DOIs, but Pubmed doesn't hold information on who was corresponding author. Is it possible to get this programmatically (i.e. without painstakingly retrieving individual papers)? The corresponding author isn't always first or last, but is indicated with an asterisk. I can extract all authors from a DOI, but not this specifically.
I use mendeley desktop.
In mendeley we can add documents manually, where we ftch all data with pubmed id, DOI, or AXN ID. And all data includes author name also.

I don't think that you can extract the corresponding author, this is not metadata that is part of a bibliographic record. The question is what do you want to do with this? The only use case I see is to send automated mail to a lot of authors at once ... For a specific paper/problem it is easy to look it up individually.
[this is a bit confusing, but I guess 'corresponding author' = person to send emails to about a paper, it is not mandatory but sometimes appears on articles]

I'm just wondering how I could go about getting this for non-PMC records, such as from PMID / DOI...
I'm trying to get the corresponding authors (names not emails) from a list of papers, to create a simplified intradepartmental form. Showing all the authors related to this list of papers I have would be overwhelming, whereas giving just corresponding authors is more likely to be useful - they're probably more well-known.
I wouldn't be using this to automate email to the authors with their email addresses provided, no. Yes, for a specific paper it's easy to look up the name individually but would be time-consuming for a few hundred!
What what I can find PMC has more metadata included, for DOI I found this schema:

but information on DOI metadata is not so easy to find, maybe there is optional information where this is included.
The corresp field seems to only exist in the JATS schema

I thought that corresponding authors were the ones that actually did all the work but are not so well-known, what about simply using First Author et al.?
