The definition of a biological function seems conditional (the environment determines which processes are adaptive) ambiguous (a given process can be co-opted to participate in varying functions) and deeply consequential (loss-of-function leads to negative selection.) In structural biology, the dogma is that "structure determines function" but this seems like a weak (if not fallacious) claim given the aforementioned conditionality and ambiguity. So an alternate wording of my question is, can we make a physical science of teleology? What about if we assume, as an axiom, that we can materially differentiate between living (propagative) and dead (non-propagative) configurations of the organism?
