I am wondering if it is possible to measure the thickness of the clouds based on the GNSS Radio Occultation. Having different GNSS satellites that are in different geometric relationship with a GNSS receiver one should probably observe a significant S/N ratio when a cloud is between the satellite and the receiver. The path should be affected as well. Would it be possible to use this »noise« to estimate, how thick the cloud is?

The problem is, that the cloud might contain ice crystal, aerosol, and water droplets. All of these can have different sizes. So it is not only the thickness that affects the signal coming from the satellite.

Any thoughts? Any papers on this topic?
