In order to solve the problem of high cost and low efficiency of transparent or semi transparent solar cells, researchers at Hong Kong Polytech University have used graphene electrodes to create a semi transparent, high efficiency and low cost perovskite type solar cell.
Why should one want to have transparent solar panels in the first place? That seems to be a contradiction right from the start: To harvest energy from light and to let light pass through simultaneously. Of course, this leads to the same question as Megan has already asked: In which wavelength range should the panel be transparent, and which part of the solar spectrum shall be absorbed?
Dear Ganesh Kesavan, one of the most interesting properties of perovskite materials for photovoltaics is the band gap tunability, obtained by changing the halide content (dx.doi.org/10.1021/nl400349b). This can be important for BIPV, as Dr. Vesce stated above and even for the construction of a tandem solar cell in which the perovskite one is the top device placed above a CIGS or a silicon solar cell (DOI: 10.1039/c5ee02965a).
