What are the basic problems with jute fiber, for making fabric suitable for garments. Apart from gunny bags, is it possible to weave jute with finer count which may be useful for some other application.
Will cyclic heating and cooling of jute fiber, work for reducing its stiffness.

Jute fiber is having unique application in packing industry. why we need for fancy application of such a strong fiber.
Yes Nisha, I believe it is possible. Obviously more research is required to reach this goal. The main limitation of jute is it's stiffness, also the fiber is course compare to flax. It is difficult to make finer uniform yarns. Woolenized jute is applied in textiles. I feel more and more other application we need to search to add value to this fiber. At present jute industry is supported by govt(forced manufacturer to use jute bags). If this fiber is used in textile more and more, surely farmers will be benefited....

Do you know why any wet-chemical process cannot be used to soften the fiber?
Will reduction of fiber diameter be of any help?
Or if we can add some functional groups by plasma processing, so that cohesion among fibers is increased, then will it help in weaving fiber to finer counts.
Yes Jute batch oil(JBO) is used to soften the fiber in spinning stage. Also softner treatment is used to soften the fabric during processing. During my Master-study I worked at JTRL, kolkata, and saw some work in this direction. You know in India people do more RE-search than research. Otherwise I feel lot of potential is there in this fiber, specially with grade 1 jute. Plasma treatment mainly modify the surface and may help to change the surface property(like hydrophilic, hydrophobic etc). I don't think that gives u much benefit to reduce stiffness, the main limitation of this fiber. I personally feel jute can be used in Denim type fabrics, also can be applied in winter garments and casual garments.
In india, we used to preparre bags with jute. but, it is not suitable for garments. We can produce woven fabrics, but not possible of knits due to its stiffness.

I agree with Dr. Basu. But another important reason is ultimate cell length. The ultimate cell length of jute fiber is much lower than flax. As a result, finer yarn cannot be produced from jute fiber. Due to coarser yarn, fine and soft fabric cannot be produced from jute fiber for apparel use. You can also get more information from the book "Handbook of Fiber Chemistry."
I suppose you may first bleach the fiber and then treat with N2 or O2 plasma and finally apply reactive silicone softener to obtain soft handle.
Jute is a multi cellular fibre (combination of ultimate cells bonded with lignin and hemicellulose) and exist as a filament ranges from 2 to 6 m. Being a multicellular fibre, during processing the component ultimate cells will be come out from the main components. As per Majid Montazer suggestion bleach for whitness, dyed with bright colours, finished with anti-shedding finish cum silicone based finish to enhance the softness.
Generally jute based textiles have itch feeling due to protruding of ultimate cells on the surface of the fabric.
Mechanically go for blending with polyester / viscose / bamboo fibres for soft feeling

Sir, the antishedding finish/silicon based finish that u have mentioned is an industrial practice at the moment. If no, its reasons and if yes in which applications/products it is used .
From my knowledge , anti-shedding finish is imparted in R&D level, while the softening finish is rarely to jute/viscose blended home textiles (may be, I am not sure). I am publishing an review paper on jute finishing. Just refer it.
What about the shedding property of Jute...... However NaOH treatment further enhances the defibrilation of ultimate cells so more shedding will result....
NaOH treatment useful for surface modification not for garment making.....
Whatever treatment we give, we con't make it wearable one. We can do blending with natural fibres to get smoothness and soft feel.
Thanks everyone to share technical information. Another problem with jute is hairiness, can any one suggest about it? Can singeing or biopolishing or both treatments eliminate this problem?
No. Jute is a multicellular fibre and lignin is the binding agent. If singeing is carried, only surface ultimate cells will be charred and interior ultimate cells may come out during washing . Similarly biopolishing may be loosen the lignin network and it further may enhances the shedding ppty.
It is better to give polymer coating like finishing to prevent shedding

Yes, it is possible to make 100% jute fabrics for apparel applications. However, the tensile strength will be lower comapred to the equivalent cotton fabrics. Ring spinning method can ben used to produce fine yarn from jute fibers.
Yes, surface coating is the possible solution to enhance the properties of jute fibres.
