Hi..I have a schiff base containing 2-hydroxy naphthalene ring, where C1 has imine bond. NMR and IR shows the presence of OH group.
But LCMS is not giving the expected mass.It is giving M-18. Is it possible to have water loss from such a system?if yes;please help me with reference..Thanks
Many a time in LCMS analysis primary product ion is observe by loss of H2O i.e. M-18. This may occur in MS source (source fragmentation). Some time this can be prevent by controlling of harsh conditions applied at MS source (i.e. minimizing solvation temperature or gas flow).
Yes..Thank you for your answer.I have suggested the same for a journal,but they replayed that this kind of water removal can happen only with aliphatic alcohols ,not with aromatic alcohols..Since then I am searching for such a reference but not getting. So could you please help me to have a reference ..Thank you so much for the response...
I too agree with Nitesh Patel. This can happen in MS due to source fragmentation.
I experienced in many saturated cyclic compounds also where removal of H2O form double bond. I don't have any data in hand right now but you can search fragmentation pattern of -OH group attached with cyclic compound.
