It is indeed possible. I have seen this scenario (low friction and high wear) with polymers. Please keep your findings well recorded, and it could be an exceptional case for the friction pairs you are using, and add more investigation including the abrasive particles (as Dr. Habib mentioned), surface imaging, roughness effects etc.

In general, friction coefficient increases for a certain duration of rubbing and after that it remains constant for the rest of the experimental time. The obtained results reveal that friction coefficient decreases with the increase in normal load for all the tested materials. It is also found that friction coefficient increases with the increase in sliding velocity for all the materials investigated. Moreover, wear rate increases with the increase in normal load and sliding velocity. At identical operating condition, the magnitudes of friction coefficient and wear rate are different for different materials depending on sliding velocity and normal load.

The coefficient of friction is a tribosystem property and not materials related. This is the reason why you get the same values of friction even for repeated tests. But the wear resistance depends on the two pairs of materials'; their response to plastic deformation and other mechanisms within the tribocontact. For the wear behavior you may need to consider hardness, surface roughness, adhesion, wear debris (either abrasive or lubricious) and sub surface stresses.

Especially in the lubricated systems, if the properties of lubricant degrades rapidly, then surface roughness and abrasive particles become the dominant factors in increasing the wear rate. A much higher value will be measured due to easy flow of entrapped particles in the contact.

Yes with the lower coefficient of friction there can be higher wear rate. There is no connection between cof and wear rate. With lower cof we can have higher wear and vice versa is also true. Even fundamental wear equation archards wear equation also never interconnects wear and cof.

Coefficient of friction is not a material property whereas the wear and wear rate is a material property. However, there is a relationship that interconnects the CoF to wear.

The surfaces in contact, velocity of operation determine the CoF and surface roughness, hardness, temperature, wear debris and velocity of operation determine the wear.

Now, the velocity of operation increase the temperature of the interface that leads to increase in CoF and this temperature decreases the surface hardness of the material and increase the wear. Here, this temperature factor is holding a thin line in determining the wear and CoF.

Remarks: it is not true all the time that lower coefficient of friction can have or induce higher wear. It depends on various surface properties.

  I can image two cases: first, high friction and low wear, and, secondly, low friction and high wear.  Slide a frozen stick of butter against a cold surface. The coefficient of friction (CoF) would be high because — I imagine — sliding would consist of stick-slip events, with high CoF due to the static CoF being high. But the wear would be low; at worst, small shards of butter would detach from the butter and attach to the surface during the slip.

  Alternatively, run the same frozen stick of butter against a very hot surface. The butter would melt, causing rapid wear of the stick, but the CoF would be low, because the butter would slide on a thin slippery film of butter.

  So, yes, it’s possible to have a higher wear rate with a lower CoF.  More importantly, realize that both the friction coefficient AND the wear rate are tribological properties of the system and neither is strictly a material property.

Friction and wear are often treated as involving only the com-positionofthetwoslidingbodies.Thisisdoneparticularlywheremodelling of friction and wear is attempted in the manner of con-tinuum mechanics

(1) Improved their tribological properties at a low value of load.

(2) Slight adhesion below 200°C or low temperature, , while being controlled by cutting grooves, severe adhesion, and delaminating above the 200°C.

(3) Inexpensive RME oil (ape-seed oil trans-esterified with methanol to attain a higher cetane number and reduced viscosity, is a promising fuel for compression-ignition engines. It is a biodegradable, and renewable, bio-mass based fuel) can give some benefits during their use in low-load frictional pairs under dry-friction conditions.

(4) The tribo film generated by the tribochemical reaction can overcome further abrasive wear to the worn surface, and functions as an effective lubricant.Use egffective lubricant.

(5) Low shearing resistance materials can be effective against high wear.

(6) The presence of thick oxides favors the formation of wear protective layers. The sintering of the debris is thermally activated and the development of protective layers is faster at high temperatures. Reduce thick oxide formation. Hot forming tool steel X38CrMoV5 for pin/disc is highly effective to reduce the oxide layers.
