I have a coating on SiO2 substrate (XRD showed that it is Mg2NiH4). However there are minimal information about Mg2NiH4 compoud fitting or binding energies, even in nistxps database. Maybe someone has an article or information about fitting of such compound or binding energies at Mg2p and Ni2p peaks? Any information which I found is very abstract without specific binding energies.
Shifts due to intermetallic interactions and bonding with hydrogen may be difficult to verify - look for data on other metallic hydrides to estimate the expected shifts.
My XPS days were a long time ago. At what eV is your C peak? 285 eV?

I am confused by your formula. I assume the Ni is in the +2 oxidation state? I would assume the Mg is in a similar state. That would need 6 H's based on 2*MgH2 + NiH2
Obviously you've described your formula correctly, so can you help me thorough my confusion?
Thanks for all answers, I think I will use your advise about other intermetalic hydrides. Alan F Rawle, yes, both elements Ni and Mg is in the +2 oxidation state. First of all we formed Mg2Ni alloy (with total oxidation state +6), and then 2H2 was incorporated. We can say that we have "alloy with incorporated hydrogen atoms". In this compound / alloy, Ni works as catalyst in hydrogenation process. I do not know if I explain you clearly, but for better understanding you may look these links:
