I am trying to prepare a polymer nanocomposite solution, the plan is to first prepare polymer separately and separately distribute iron oxide nanoparticles (having no coating) in de-ionized water. Then mix the polymer and water having iron oxide Np's for achieving the desired nanocomposite solution. For this i tried to distribute iron oxide NP's (50 - 100 nm) in DI water with the help of tip sonicator, but it seems that nanoparticles soon set down at the bottom of the container when i stop the sonication. Can you please suggest a way out to distribute them properly?

I think you can try by using some surface materials like SDS, Triton 100....etc if the ultrasonic is not active alone...

If you are trying to form a colloidal dispersion of these which remains stable (i.e. does not settle) then you will need to find a suitable protecting agent which sticks to the iron oxide NPs and prevents their re aggregation. Often polymeric species can do this. An old fashioned protecting agent which aids in dispersal is something like "gum arabic"
