Hi Ong. I am not an exploration geologist, but your question is more a conceptual question, therefore the same basic principles apply. Laszlo is correct in saying that to answer your question, one would need to fully understand the geological setting of your site, and to some degree of the sites that you intend to use as reference or comparison. Metallogenic deposits of the same style typically occur in similar geological setting, part of the definition of "the same style". IOCG will always need a structure, fluid path and a reactive horizon (e.g. black shale), skarn will always need a hydrous intrusive and a reactive, carbonate rich host rock; etc. Consequently, if you have even a concept stage understanding of the geological units and lithologies at your site, you can compare them to the nearby existing mines/deposits. Even better if you know where the main structures are located relative to these. So, 1) find out the deposit styles of the nearby mines, 2) find out the geological/lithological units at your site; 3) identify similarities and differences. After this, by the way of elimination, you can narrow down which deposit styles may occur and which are viable for your site. Metallogenic deposits more often than not occur in "belts", ether related to certain lithologies or structures. Those yellow dots on Laszlo's map are lining up very nicely along the main suture zone. So the answer to your question: yes, to a degree of certainty.

Of course...that is how scientific exploration works. Otherwise you have to keep re-inventing the wheel. The real question is not "type" but what you say about it. I attach a little "cartoon" I made regarding a major porphyry copper deposit in Chile. Having proposed a coherent geological mechanism involving a mine and a process...in this case copper bearing magmatism associated a proposed tectonic detachment feature, now I try to tie local deposits together. They may all be different types but they might fit into a larger process that you can use to predict or explain. You might find skarns here and dikes there or the remnants of a leakage pattern in a "fault" but they are part of a whole...assuming, of course the respective age dating allows it.

Yes, it is possible! If the geologic terrains of the known mineral deposit, in terms of structures, metamorphism, and geochemical conditions are similar to that of the unknown mineral deposit, then, there is a possibility of similarity in a mineral deposition. The possibility is the keyword here.
