There are plenty of generally non-toxic chlorine and nitrogen ion based antiseptics used in hospitals. Some of them, based on quaternary ammonium cation are active even against fungi (misoses, house mold); while that ammonium cation is generated by human body itself.

You can examine the possibility of incorporating such ions in your material.

Dear all, I would like to add to the previous answers the use of medecinal herbs for such purposes. According to many studies, herbs are extremely efficient and with less side effects compared to metals based drugs. My Regards

A variety of concepts and methods have been developed to produce materials with antimicrobial properties, most of which have been focused on adding additives such as natural compounds, peptides, chelating agents, antibiotics, polymers, Quaternary ammonium compounds, enzymes, and metals (Copper, zinc, titanium, silver nanoparticles etc.) material. But, in the absence of well-designed in vivo experiments, it is impossible to prove their non-toxic, antimicrobial and biocompatible properties. So this is a great challenge for material scientists, biologists and microbiologists in the near future.

In general, toxicity depends on many parameters, such as the material the nanostructures are made of, the shape and the size of those nanostructures, the possible existence of a coating, the surface charge, and of course, on the concentration.

In particular, one of the main mechanisms inducing antibacterial properties and even anticancer properties is the enhancement on the local production of reactive oxidative species (ROS) by the nanostructures. And typically, there is a range of concentrations in which the nanostructures remain harmless for healthy human cells but are toxic to bacteria or cancer cells.

For instance, in this paper you can see that Te nanoparticles synthesized by a green route using citric extracts showed antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and -positive bacteria and an anticancer effect towards human melanoma cells for low concentration, whereas they showed no significant cytotoxic effect towards human dermal fibroblast (HDF). But for high concentration (in this case above 50 micrograms per milliliter), they were cytotoxic towards HDF also.
