In health care and also as a staff member in prison it's forbidden to have contact with former prisoners our ex-clients. This is almost impossible when You are an experience expert in recovery.
In Western Australia it is strongly discouraged that staff and ex prisoners have contact post release. Even in the event of accidental contact - running into each other at shops, social events etc - multiple reports of the contact must be lodged.
In cases such as mine where as an ex prisoner I know work in research and advocacy around domestic violence and women in prison the Justice Department grudgingly allows contact but still subject to brief reports.
I believe this is a shame, because staff have such a huge impact on prisoner's lives and good officers can be a strong and positive influence
