It is not necessary and it is difficult to keep the DO constant. But keeping it higher than 1.5-2 mg/L is enough. The DO may decrease to very low levels especially the feeding time is too short.
i think in react phase DO shouldn't be constant as there is no input to the reactor except air flow to the reactor. so gradually the concentration of NH3 or other will gradually decay down. so if we maintain DO constant then we are wasting energy .
i also couldn't understand what is the logic behind maintaining DO constant. as some book are mentioning DO should be constant in react phase.

If you maintain a constant aeration rate, then you will have differences in the measured DO concentration, as, while there are substrate in the bulk liquid, microorganisms used the DO. When the substrates are finished, then the DO will rise.
