Some crystalline solids are covered by an amorphous layer at the surface. Are these amorphous/disordered surfaces usually directly observed by microscopic techniques?
If yes, could some literature (e.g. some review articles or some systematic SEM/TEM studies) be kindly referenced here? I'm mainly interested in metal oxides, more specifically transition aluminas, but anything relevant will be appreciated.
I would like to see a crystalline bulk and a gradual or abrupt disordering towards the surface. Also, the extent of surface disorder as a function of particle size.

Additionally search for "gate oxide", these are very thin oxide layers (of Si, Hf and others) used in microelectronics.

Thank you for the response, it was definitely helpful and also led me to some more articles.
Now if anyone knows about any one-component systems (just ordindary crystalline particles/nanoparticles of the same material having an amorphous surface) studied by microscopic techniques, I would be grateful.
My own long literature search has unfortunately not been very successful.
some crystalline solids cover the layer of the grain boundary. so the best way to resolve the phenomenon take SAED ( selected area electron diffraction) patterns in TEM which show the diffraction if it is crystalline. On the other hand, if it is amorphous, no diffraction is observed in TEM-SAED.
