I am trying to simulate a visible light communication system in Optisystem. I have added white light source as ambient noise, now can I use FSO channel?
My second question is, in FSO system generally laser or IR is used as a source and mostly FSO is used for outdoor application, so using LED as light source and FSO channel, can it be proposed that VLC is used for outdoor applications as well using FSO?
Yes, it is possible to use visible light in a free space optical communication channel, because the laser beam can be tracked, as long as the phase noise is compensated at the receiver, generally is DFB lasers are used.
FSO is based on the same principle as VLC but it uses light in the IR spectrum for communication. Invention RONJA device in 2001, which can achieve 10Mbps network speed over 0.87 miles boosted the research activities in the FSO technology. FSO was initially used for outdoor communication applications. But in the recent times, indoor applications like enterprise connectivity, hospitals are increasing.
It is all light so you can use the same channel. Be careful with the source though. LED is normally described as Lambertian source while FSO is typically based on Gaussian beam. With a good approximation you can always use plane or spherical wave but it will depend on the link specifications.
