Assuming that doctoral candidates are usually coupled with supervisors based on areas of academic interest which they have in common, to what extent is it customary for the supervisor to discuss his own previous research with his student?

Is it accepted/required/desirable/appropriate that the supervisor recommends that the student review the supervisor's previous research and publications?

Is the student expected to search for his supervisors work on academic databases on the web or does the supervisor usually provide the student with precise references to his published work?
