From my simplistic view, computer or computing science is a pure science discipline that studies the nature of computing. Information Systems is an applied social science that studies the interaction between people, information and technology. Information Technology is an applied engineering science that studies how to design, build and implement computing infrastructures such as networks.

I believe these two topics to be disjoint, but complementary. Information Technology works at the technological frontier of Software and Hardware, their implementation and application, whilst Computer Science works with the mathematical, logical and theoretical basis of computation, information transformations, algorithms and the inherent complexity of formal problems.

My point of view is, though, slightly biased, for it is highly based on the definition of Computer Science as a very big branch of applied Mathematics, but that definition is not applied by all Computer Science research centers around the globe.

Many respectable research departments define CS as a discipline of Mathematics, while other equally respectable departments define CS as a discipline of Engineering, and others even as a discipline among the natural sciences (I find this last definition the least appealing of all, but they probably have a good reason for it). The thing is, with said discrepancy, it's hard to define where Information Technology comes in.

None of the two can exist in resoluted means but still they are two different entities contributing to each of themselves.

It is not part of one another. But both IT and CS are highly overlapping applied science subjects.

I am of the opinion that Computer Science itself is an amalgam of computer-related subjects, not all of which are actually very strongly related. I think it should be split into at least three separate disciplines, one comprising technological affairs (where IT would fit), one comprising philosophical-ish affairs (a few branches of AI) and one focusing on the mathematical stuff (theoretical CS).

If that was done, we could easily situate IT in one or more of these disciplines.

To Me Information Technology is the combination of Computer and Communication Systems (Not Electronic Only). Where as computer science is the integral of all of the other subjects.

I think information technology is started before computer science. so we cannot say that Information Technology is a part of Computer Science. but, we can say that computer science is one way to present information, or a new technology of information technologies

In my opinion, they both looks same and their contents are also almost similar . But there is difference between CS and IT. By definition, computer science is the science of computing. encompasses a variety of topics that relates to computation, like abstract analysis of algorithms, programming languages, software and computer hardware. While, Information Technology is the technology required for information processing; to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and retrieve information.

In academic way, the computer science term serve as an umbrella term for all theory relating to information technology.

Regarding the curricula - University of Tirana has 3 curricula in Bsc level: Informatics (or Computer Science) and IT in Faculty of Natural Science, and Economic Informatics in Faculty of Economy. Also, we provide diploma in Master and PhD levels in Information Systems.

The coding is a branch of coding information and communication before computer science. So the information technology was growing from transfer information on stone, paper, and now in digital. It is why we say that, computer science is a tool to transfer, and manipulate information.

I partially agree with last paragraph,,,! As I mentioned above: By definition, computer science is the science (of computing), so, not a tool... at least in the academic perspective.

I always believed computing to be its own thing rather than simply a slice of a different area, because the research paradigms are observably divergent from those of the known fields. I was waiting for someone to post a more detailed explanation of my sentiment regarding that on a major midst (like ACM or even IEEE). This was a very good read, thanks for sharing.

In my opinion when a branch of science grow, it must be divided. Before, computer science was a part of meth science then it became one part. In the past 3 years researches started to look to networking as a new science "Network science" and not apart of computer science. What I want to say is computer science will be divided very soon to many fields. However, in higher studies, such as, Ph.D these parts will be mixed again.

Twentieth Century marks the dawn of "Convergence". Convergence in Science and Technology. With the development of Computing Technology , a new era of real convergence started. The Telecommunications and Computing Technologies converged to an entirely new Technology called INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY. This convergence or the happy marriage of these two technologies gave birth to a number of wonderful New Services which were found to be more productive and useful than when they were progressing in its own parallel way. The " Internet ", its by product, is an entirely new service which was unheard or unimaginable a few decades before. In its wake , the real CONVERGENCE TECHNOLOGY came up which is nothing but the integration of Telecommunications, Computing and Telecasting Technologies. 21 st Century is the age of Convergence- giving Triple Play Service of VOICE, DATA and VIDEO

Simply put, they both are interwoven. Information Technology deals with all forms and ways of handling information. That is, capturing, processing, storing and retrieving useful data. Computer Science is the knowledge of computing and all it entails in processing information (useful data). There are various schools of thought giving differing interpretation to these terms. I would say it is more or less like the chicken and egg situation. CS applies scientific principles in processing data while IT encompasses all of these processes with the added dimension of usefulness in society. It is important to look at approved curricula for these domains which vary from country to country. Hence the definition provided by IEEE and ACM provide good guide for practitioners. In the UK there has been a recent move to define clearly the similarities and differences between the two terms which has led to revision of schools curriculum, the involvement of professional bodies such as BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT and kick off of such initiatives as Computing at schools (CAS) now widespread through the country working and sustaining good practice in computing and IT education.

It is a very intelligent question by interesting, as well. I perceive this question as, "Is Technology part of Science, or vice verse"? I think, YES Technology is part of Science. In the language of the question, Information Technologies are part of Computer Science.

@For all Followers: What happens with "Project CS4EDU: Computer Science for Education". Namely, in 2008, the National Science Foundation (US) started the ambitious effort, project CS/10,000, which supports developing a new high school curriculum for computing, revising the computer science AP curriculum, and having computer science taught in 10,000 schools by 10,000 well-qualified teachers by 2015.
