It depends on the case you are talking about, but as I know of course it is not useless, as it has many applications. One of the simplest examples is that if there were no friction, we wouldn't be able to walk and shoes just slipped! Also almost all fastening devices rely on frictional forces to keep them in place once secured, examples being screws, nails, nuts, clips and clamps. But there are some disadvantages related to the presence of frictional forces, which I think the most important can be the energy waste.
it may be useful or not. it depends on your case. for example, friction helping cars stop when the brakes are applied or friction produces heat causing wastage of energy in machines.
