I teach Process Equipment Design and use Coulson & Richardson’s Chemical Engineering Series, 4th Ed., vol 6 by R.K.Sinnott as one of the textbooks.

One of my students is very keen to comment that the solution to Example 12.2 in the textbook (pp 679-683 – example of shell-and-tube HE design) maybe incorrect. And I agreed.

As stated in Example 12.2, the pressure drop for each stream is limited to 100 kN/m2.

Meanwhile the calculated pressure drop for the shell-side is 252 kN/m2. Still, it is concluded that 252 is “well within the specification”.

Can anyone add any comment on this?
